What is Metabolics Antenatal Formula?

Metabolics Antenatal Formula is a specially formulated nutritional supplement designed to support women who are pregnant and breastfeeding. Antenatal Formula is the follow on supplement from Metabolics Preconception Formula, designed for men and women trying to conceive.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding is a particularly nutritionally demanding time where the body is depleted of key nutrients as well as needing certain nutrients in excess of what they would have done pre-pregnancy in order for both the mother and baby or foetus to thrive.

New formula

We are constantly evaluating our ingredients and formulas across our entire product range to ensure they are as effective and high quality as possible. As part of this activity, we recently (August 2023) identified improvements we could make to the Antenatal Formula to ensure it better supports the nutritional needs of mothers, their offspring and mothers to be. See our label updates page for more details.

The changes from our previous formulation include:

- Choline

We have sourced a new, branded version of choline bitartrate known as VitaCholineR choline bitartrate. This is a premium form of choline bitartrate and moving to this has enabled us to increase the amount of choline we offer per serving to 150 mg (increasing a capsule amount from 16.7mg to 25mg).

Choline is a vital nutrient during pregnancy as maternal choline intake during pregnancy and lactation contributes to normal foetal and infant development, especially of the liver.

It is widely considered that people do not consume enough choline in the UK, which is explored in the article “Could we be overlooking a potential choline crisis in the United Kingdom?” by the British Medical Journal.

Whilst you should also source more choline from your diet, the Antenatal Formula acts as a suitable nutritional support throughout your pregnancy.

- Vitamin E

We have changed our source of vitamin E to a natural form of D Alpha Tocopherol. D Alpha Tocopherol is the form of Vitamin E required by the body and the bioavailability of α-tocopherol from α-tocopherol succinate is equivalent to that of free α-tocopherol. The daily recommended amount of Vitamin E as α- tocopherol is 12 mg. The Antenatal Formula offers 50% of your daily requirement.

A capsule now delivers 1mg where it used to deliver 0.76mg.

Other changes:

- Vitamin K2 has been reduced from 13.3mcg to 12mcg per capsule.

- Vitamin C has been reduced from 16.7mg to 15mg per capsule.

- Thiamin (Vitamin B1) has been reduced from 0.83mg to 0.4mg per capsule.

- Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) has been reduced from 0.82mg to 0.5mg per capsule.

- Niacin (Vitamin B3)has been reduced from 3.3mg to 3mg per capsule.

- Vitamin B6 has been reduced from 1.7mg to 0.8mg per capsule.

- Vitamin B12 has been reduced from 16.7mcg to 4mcg per capsule.

- Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) has been increased from 0.83mg to 1mg per capsule.

- Magnesium has been increased from 23mg to 29mg per capsule.

- Manganese has been increased from 0.17mg to 0.2mg per capsule.

- Selenium has been increased 8.4mcg to 8.5mcg per capsule.

- Plant squalene has been removed

- Phytosterols has been removed

Increases in certain ingredients have been to better align with recommendations for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Where ingredients have been reduced it is where the previous value was not necessary and to make room for increases in more important ingredients such as the choline.

What is Metabolics Antenatal Formula good for?

With the RDA of folic acid, plus a safe form of vitamin A, this multiple vitamin and mineral supplement is designed for women who are pregnant and breastfeeding.

It is accepted that women who are pregnant, and women thinking of becoming pregnant, should maintain increased levels of folic acid intake. Women who are at higher risk of neural tube defect-affected pregnancy are especially advised to increase folic acid intake. While it is always recommended to obtain nutrients from natural sources, a supplement provides a convenient way of achieving required levels.

In pregnancy, iodine is linked with reduced carriage and congenital foetal abnormalities.

Metabolics Antenatal Formula includes vitamin B6, iodine, and selenium for hormone support:

Selenium contributes to the normal thyroid function and iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function.

Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity.

Vitamin B12, vitamin C, biotin, iodine, calcium, and magnesium provide energy support, as they all contribute to your normal energy-yielding metabolism

Vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, and folate contribute to the normal function of the immune system.

Who is Metabolics Antenatal Formula for?

Metabolics Antenatal Formula is designed for pregnant and breastfeeding women to support both themselves and their offspring nutritionally. The formula includes nutrients that would otherwise be depleted at such a time and lead to increased feelings of tiredness or a weakened immune system.

All ingredients have been included at a level that is optimum and safe for both pregnancy and postpartum.
