What is magnesium?
Magnesium is a vital mineral that the body relies on for a wide range of essential functions. It participates in over 300 enzymatic reactions, facilitating various metabolic pathways crucial for proper bodily function. These include protein synthesis, muscle contraction, regulation of blood glucose levels and blood pressure, and the functioning of nerves. Moreover, magnesium is integral to energy production, being a crucial component of the Mg-ATPase complex and essential for oxidative phosphorylation.
Magnesium is discussed at length in our 2020 Practitioner’s Guide to Magnesium.

H2: What is the best form of magnesium?
While both organic and inorganic magnesium salts can contribute to magnesium intake, organic forms may offer advantages in terms of bioavailability and potential additional benefits, such as mild laxative effects. However, the choice between organic and inorganic forms may depend on individual preferences, tolerances, and specific health goals.
Organic Magnesium Salts
Magnesium Citrate
Derived from magnesium bound to citric acid, found naturally in citrus fruits, this form is highly bioavailable. It stimulates bowel motility, making it a gentle laxative. Best taken on an empty stomach with plenty of water or juice.
Magnesium Malate
Combines magnesium with malic acid, found in fruits like apricots and grapes. It's well absorbed and may have a milder laxative effect than other forms.
Magnesium Ascorbate
A buffered form of vitamin C and magnesium, offering good bioavailability and gastrointestinal tolerance.
Inorganic Magnesium Salts
Magnesium Oxide
Despite its high elemental magnesium content, it's poorly absorbed, with only about 4% being absorbed by the body.
Magnesium Chloride
Well absorbed across a wide pH range and may enhance absorption due to its chloride component, making it suitable for those with low stomach acid.
Magnesium Sulfate
Also known as Epsom salts, it's used for constipation relief but has limited and variable bioavailability.
Magnesium Phosphate
Practically insoluble in water, it's bound to phosphate in teeth and bone.
Magnesium Carbonate
Nearly insoluble, it can convert to magnesium chloride in the presence of stomach acid and may have a mild laxative effect.
Magnesium Hydroxide
Also known as milk of magnesia, it's used as an antacid or laxative but has poor absorption.
Chelated Supplements
Chelated refers to the process by which minerals are bound to an amino acid or peptide, making it more readily absorbed by the body.
Magnesium Bisglycinate
Chelated with glycine, magnesium bisglycinate offers improved solubility and bioavailability. It may also have a calming effect on the brain and support sleep quality.
