What is Metabolics 5-Hydroxytryptophan?
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) is an amino acid involved in converting the amino acid L Tryptophan to Serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter or "messenger brain chemical" associated with the regulation of sleep. Serotonin then goes on to make melatonin in the pineal gland in the brain and adequate amounts of melatonin, which is an antioxidant, also help us to sleep.
There are no dietary sources of 5-Hydroxytryptophan, Metabolics 5-Hydroxytryptophan is derived from the West African Griffonia tree, which is a climbing evergreen shrub that produces green flowers and, later, black seed pods and is the only natural source of 5Hydroxytryptophan available.
Indigenous people of west Africa have used the leaf sap of these shrubs for years to aid the healing of burns and other such uses and the chopped up bark has been used for sores but the seeds are the most sought after element of the plant.
What is Metabolics 5-Hydroxytryptophan for?
5-Hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP, is recognized for its efficient absorption by the body and its ability to enter the bloodstream readily. It is known to cross the blood-brain barrier, where it is available for biochemical processes.
Role of Vitamin B6
This supplement includes Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate, the active form of Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is essential for a variety of bodily functions, including supporting normal psychological and nervous system functions. It also plays a role in the metabolism of various hormones.
Source and General Use
5-HTP in this product is derived from the seeds of the Griffonia plant. It is utilized for its properties related to the natural processes involving serotonin, a compound involved in normal nerve and brain function.
Who is Metabolics 5-Hydroxytryptophan for?
5-Hydroxytryptophan is a convenient way of supporting a natural sleeping pattern and regulating mood. L-tryptophan can be obtained through dietary sources such as turkey, chicken, pumpkin seeds, spinach, milk, and bananas, but 5-Hydroxytryptophan is produced by the body and some people, therefore, find it beneficial to supplement this nutrient if their body is not producing enough.
Therefore, this supplement may be useful for people who either do not produce enough 5-Hydroxytryptophan or are unable to consume dietary sources of l-tryptophan.
There are also some studies that suggest 5-Hydroxytryptophan may be useful for weight management support, although more research is needed to draw conclusive results.
Why use Metabolics 5-Hydroxytryptophan
Metabolics prides itself on producing food supplements with simple ingredient lists so that there are minimal ingredients that have the potential to interfere with the active ingredients.
As 5-Hydroxytryptophan is involved with serotonin and melatonin production it is very important to consult a healthcare practitioner prior to adding this food supplement to your diet. This is particularly true if you are taking medication such as sleep or mood regulating medication, which could see you producing too much serotonin or melatonin.
