Collagen is the most important structural protein in the body. It strengthens tendons, bones and teeth and reinforces connective tissue. It also supports the skin and internal organs making up 25-30% of total body protein. There are 25 types of Collagen, 12 of which are in the skin. In fact 80% of the dry weight of the skin is collagen.

Why Take Collagen?

Our bodies Collagen production decreases with age, beginning in our mid 20’s, becoming progressively less with each decade. The obvious outward signs of this are lines and wrinkles but internally this may be manifest as strains and sprains, running or jumping may become painful and joint pain may ensue. Also over exposure to the sun and environmental pollutants can inhibit collagen production, depleting the nutrients required for collagen production. Smoking and alcohol can also decrease collagen production.

Collagen is made up of a triple helix of 3 protein strands wound together. Each strand or chain is over 1400 amino acids long. There is a repeated sequence of 3 amino acids, with every third amino acid being glycine. The other 2 amino acids are proline and hydroxyproline. Hydroxyproline is created in the cells from Proline with Vitamin C and Oxygen.

These collagen chains are packed into packets and secreted into spaces between the cells. It is modified along the way by the addition of N Acetyl Glucosamine and then passes to the extracellular matrix. Here the triple helix (tropocollagen) is formed, the helix being linked by lysine derivatives. It automatically assembles into fibrils (tiny fibres) and micro fibrils, overlapping each other and criss crossing the space between all our cells.

This confers great flexibility to tissues such as tendons and skin. A collagen fibre of 1mm can support a mass of at least 10kg before it breaks.

What Makes Our Collagen Formula Different?

So, from the structure and manufacture of collagen alone Metabolics have added Proline, Lysine, Glycine, N Acetyl Glucosamine and Vitamin C to this Collagen formula.

Vitamin C may be the most important for the production of procollagen molecules.

Without it fibres will be weak leading to sagging skin, and soft tissues, wrinkles and lack of ligamentous strength. Vitamin C is required for the formation of collagen in the blood vessels, bone, cartilage and collagen in gums, teeth and skin. Chondroitin Sulphate has been shown in vitro to help collagen formation and has been added to this formulation.

Hyaluronic acid has also been added to enhance collagen formation. A paper published in the International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology in 2009 concluded that Hyaluronic Acid in combination with Proline, Lysine and Glycine enhanced the biosynthesis of Collagen I and IV.

Copper is essential for activating an enzyme, lysyl oxidase which interacts with lysine, necessary in the formation of cross linking which gives the stability to the collagen. http://jn.nutrition.org/content/112/4/708.full.pdf

Zinc is also essential for cross linking in collagen. Studies involving zinc deficiency resulted in overall collagen deficiency. It is also needed for zinc dependent enzymes in the collagen and sponge connective tissue.

Biotin is utilised by every cell in the body and plays a role in cell growth and division through its role in the manufacture of DNA and RNA; the genetic components of cells. There are 34 genes involved in the manufacture of collagen.
