L-Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid. It is manufactured in the body from glutamate and ammonia by the enzyme glutamine synthetase and stored in the muscles.

Glutamine becomes depleted during exercise, especially in endurance sports and bodybuilding. It is released from the muscles to replenish any deficit. A deficiency of glutamine is related to muscle wasting.
