Suitable For
Lactobacillus acidophilus
The GI tract is approximately 30 feet long in an adult and approximately 100 trillion viable (living) bacteria reside in it, weighing approximately 2lb in body weight. About 85% of these should be “good” bacteria.
L acidophilus is naturally present and is one of the most important “good” microorganisms in the gut or small intestine. It can implant itself in the lining of the wall of the vagina, cervix and urethra, mouth and intestinal wall. As a “good” bacterium it can protect against “bad” bacteria that cause disease. It can break down sugars to lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide making it difficult for “bad “ aerobic bacteria to live and multiply.
L acidophilus has known antibacterial activity against Salmonella, E Coli and Candida. It can produce natural antibiotics such as lactocidin and acidophilin.
L Acidophilus is one of the most commonly taken probiotics to replenish the GI tract with healthy bacteria after antibiotics.
Although there are no recommended intakes or upper limits for these bacteria, the dose will vary according to the health condition.
