Metabolics Threonine

What is Metabolics Threonine?

Threonine is one of the essential amino acids, meaning it must be obtained through the diet as the body cannot produce it on its own. It is involved in several key biochemical pathways including the synthesis and structure of proteins.

Threonine helps make up collagen, elastin, and tooth enamel, and is also used in the synthesis of other amino acids such as glycine and serine. These amino acids, in turn, are involved in additional metabolic functions and the formation of proteins and nitrogen-containing compounds.

Threonine appears to follow two primary metabolic pathways:

·         As a precursor to key intermediates in energy metabolism, including succinyl-CoA, acetyl-CoA, and pyruvate, which are part of the citric acid cycle.

·         As a building block in the synthesis of proteins and other nitrogen-containing molecules, including the amino acid glycine, which has multiple biochemical roles.

Threonine also plays an indirect role in the production and recycling of SAM (S-adenosylmethionine), a compound that donates methyl groups for essential methylation reactions such as DNA and protein modification. It supports this pathway as it helps to produce glycine and serine, which are key players in one-carbon metabolism, the pathway responsible for SAM regeneration.

In addition, threonine works alongside methionine and aspartic acid in pathways associated with fat metabolism in the liver.

Threonine is found in most protein-containing foods including meat, poultry, dairy, legumes, nuts, and seeds. The general daily guideline for an adult is approximately 900mg.
