What is Astragalus?

Astragalus is a herb and the plant itself belongs to the same family as beans or legumes. The genus Astragalus, commonly known as milk vetches, comprises more than 2,000 species distributed worldwide. These perennial herbs grow to approximately 1 m high, are native to the northern provinces of China and are cultivated in China, Korea, and Japan. The plants bear tubular yellowish flowers and small (3 to 6 cm) leaves.

Only two species of Astragalus are primarily used in food supplements — Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus. Specifically, the root of the plant is made into many different forms of supplements, including liquid extracts, capsules, powders and teas.

Who is Astragalus for?

Astragalus is thought to stimulate the immune system. It has antioxidant effects that inhibit free radical production. In the body, free radicals damage cells and are linked to many health problems associated with ageing. Astragalus is also believed to contribute to your mental and physcial wellbeing, particularly for women going through menopause. Astragalus contributes to the resistance during the premenstrual cycle and contributes to relieving menopause symptoms. The adaptogen herb is reported to ease hot flushes and even, in some cases, night sweats. The best way of maximising these effects is to start taking astragalus in perimenopause, before the start of menopause, and possibly alongside a menopause supplement.

Astragalus is also reported to help maintain mobility and flexibility of joints, supporting joint health.
