What is Metabolics Preconception Formula?

Starting on the path to conceive and welcome a baby into your life can feel like a deeply meaningful and serious decision. At Metabolics, we fully appreciate the importance of this life-changing journey. That's why Metabolics Preconception Formula has been meticulously formulated, designed to support aspiring parents in their endeavour for optimal health before conception.

Preconception Formula is a result of extensive research and scientific expertise, combining essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants carefully selected to support normal reproductive health and overall well-being.

It is recommended that both potential parents take Preconception Formula at least one month prior to conception and preferably for three months.

Preconception nutrition and supplementation is important to maintain good nutritional status prior to conception to help minimise health risks to mothers and their babies.

It is also an important supplement that can be taken by the potential father as a good nutritional status is important for fertility.

New formula

We are continuously evaluating our ingredients and formulas across our entire product range to ensure they are as effective and high-quality as possible. As part of this process, in June 2024, we identified improvements to our Preconception Formula to better support the nutritional needs of mothers, mothers-to-be, their offspring, and potential fathers. You can find more details on these updates on our label updates page. Due to these changes , we have also reduced the number of capsules from 6 to 5.

The changes from our previous formulation include:

- Choline

We have sourced a new, branded version of choline bitartrate known as VitaCholineR choline bitartrate. This is a premium form of choline bitartrate.

- Vitamin E

We have changed our source of vitamin E to a natural form of D Alpha Tocopherol. D Alpha Tocopherol is the form of Vitamin E required by the body and the bioavailability of α-tocopherol from α-tocopherol succinate is equivalent to that of free α-tocopherol.

What is Metabolics Preconception Formula good for?

Metabolics Preconception Formula contains ingredients that are essential during the preconception stage because they help prepare the body for conception by supporting hormonal balance, reproductive health, energy production, and overall cellular function. They also help build up nutrient stores that will be needed for the increased demands of pregnancy, ensuring a strong foundation for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Metabolics Preconception Formula contains key ingredients such as:

Folate

If there is inadequate folate in the diet, then anaemia or neural tube defects of the spine (spina bifida) or brain (anencephaly) may occur. It is difficult to obtain enough levels of folate in the diet, so recommendations are for women of child-bearing age to take 400 micrograms of folate daily by supplementation one month before conception and up to three months after. Supplemental folate, or folic acid, intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.

Prenatal folate is important for early child development.

Choline

Choline plays a crucial role in foetal brain and nervous system development. Having adequate levels of choline before conception helps prepare the body for the rapid cell division and neural development that occur in early pregnancy.

Choline is an essential component of cell membranes and helps in the production of phospholipids, which are necessary for healthy cell structure and function. This is critical during the early stages of pregnancy when cells are rapidly dividing.

Choline is involved in the methylation process, which helps regulate gene expression, DNA synthesis, and repair. These functions are crucial during conception and early pregnancy when proper DNA regulation is needed for healthy foetal development.

Similar to folic acid, choline has been linked to a reduced risk of neural tube defects, which can occur very early in pregnancy, often before many women know they are pregnant.

Maternal choline intake during pregnancy and lactation contributes to normal liver function of the foetus and exclusively breastfed infants.

According to this 2023 article “Choline and contribution to normal liver function of the foetus and exclusively breastfed infants” published by the EFSA, ‘there is a gap in supply of choline during pregnancy and lactation of ~ 100 mg/day that needs to be achieved via additional intake, through the natural diet or a supplemental source of choline.

Metabolics Preconception Formula also contains several powerful antioxidants including  vitamin C & E  to supports overall cellular health and protect against oxidative stress, which can negatively affect fertility and reproductive cells.

Zinc is crucial for hormone regulation, ovulation, and sperm quality. It also supports DNA synthesis and cell division, processes that are important as soon as conception occurs.

Vitamin C also enhances iron absorption, which is important for maintaining healthy iron levels before pregnancy.

Calcium ensures that a woman has adequate calcium stores to support future foetal bone development, preventing calcium depletion during pregnancy.

Iron which helps build iron stores to prevent anaemia in early pregnancy. Adequate iron levels are critical for supporting increased blood volume after conception.

Menaquinone-7 (Vitamin K2) Supports bone health and proper calcium regulation, ensuring that the mother has strong bones before pregnancy.

Who is Metabolics Preconception Formula for?

INFERTILITY IN MEN

A study titled “Micronutrients intake is associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men” showed that men with higher levels of certain micronutrients might produce sperm with less DNA damage, especially in older men. These nutrients included Vitamin C, E, Beta-carotene, Zinc and Folate.

Zinc in particular, contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, normal DNA synthesis, and the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood. This mineral is generally associated with the normal functions of the male reproductive system, therefore it is extremely important to maintain good zinc status. Deficiency in zinc is associated with low testosterone levels, poor sperm quality and an increased risk of male infertility, as highlighted in the study “Zinc is an Essential Element for Male Fertility: A Review of Zn Roles in Men's Health, Germination, Sperm Quality, and Fertilization.”.

Selenium is also included in Preconception Formula as it contributes to normal spermatogenesis and protects cells from oxidative stress.

Selenium forms part of the selenoenzymes and these protect sperm form damage and mutation. They make up part of the cell structure and the protein substances in the sperm tail. Combining Selenium with vitamin E is reported to have beneficial and protective effects on sperm motility, as suggested in the study “Selenium–vitamin E supplementation in infertile men: effects on semen parameters and pregnancy rate”.

Men should take at least three months, but preferably six months, of Metabolics Preconception Formula, as this gives two full cycles of sperm production.

FERTILITY IN WOMEN

A review of studies of micronutrient supplements on female fertility in Current Opinion of Obstetric Gynaecology on April 6 2013 summarised that “Apart from lowering the malformation risk by periconceptual supplementation of folic acid, substitution with different micronutrients particularly folic acid, Vitamins B6, C, D, E, Iodine, Selenium, Iron and DHA.

There are certain nutrients that are particularly important to build up prior to conception. Requirements for folic acid, calcium, iron, and zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Vitamin B increase substantially during pregnancy so it is essential to have an adequate pool of these.

Why use Metabolics Preconception Formula

It is particularly important to use a high quality nutritional supplement preconceptually that does not contain pesticide or heavy metal residues and contains nutrient forms that are particularly bioavailable. As this is a daily supplement, it is also important that it contains vitamins at levels safe for mother and baby. Metabolics is particularly careful to source very high quality, bioavailable ingredients.
