Lactobacillus Salivarius can colonise the colon throughout its length and is able to produce large amounts of lactic acid decreasing the pH of the GI tract.
Lactic acid is able to suppress is able to suppress the growth of the bacteria responsible for stomach ulcers (H Pylorobacterium) by degrading urease. Urease is an enzyme produced by the bacteria necessary for its metabolism and virulence that it produces in large amounts. Urease is inactivated at pHs of 4 and lower.
