Suitable For
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a GAG (glycosaminoglycan). It is produced naturally in the body in plentiful amounts when we are young. It is found in the greatest concentration in the synovial fluid of articular joints and is required for lubrication and shock absorption of the joint. It is also found in the vitreous humour of the eye and of course in the skin.
As we age the body produces less Hyaluronic Acid and joints become stiff and painful, skin starts to become dry and exhibit wrinkles.
Hyaluronic Acid breaks down under free radical attack. Free radicals are produced in sunlight (Ultraviolet radiation) and these stimulate the enzyme hyaluronidase that breaks down and attacks Hyaluronic Acid - hence excessive exposure to the sun results in aging skin.
One study, which examined the absorption, excretion and distribution of radiolabeled Hyaluronic Acid after a single oral administration in Wistar rats and Beagle dogs, demonstrated that Hyaluronic Acid is absorbed and distributed to organs and joints after a single oral administration.
Other studies have been done in rats and dogs demonstrating oral ingestion of Hyaluronic Acid had a positive effect on joints.
Many sources of Hyaluronic Acid are of animal origin, Metabolics Hyaluronic Acid is of vegetarian origin.
