Metabolics Anti Homocysteine support is a combination of Folate in the bioavailable form, methyltetrahydrofolate, therefore not requiring the gene for break down of folic acid, vitamin B12 in its bioavailable form of methylcobalamin, vitamin B6 in its bioavailable form of Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate, vitamin B2 in its bioavailable form of Riboflavin 5 Phosphate and Choline as the precursor to betaine. Choline depleted diets tend to increase plasma concentrations of homocysteine.

What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is a chemical in the blood that is produced when the amino acid methionine is broken down.Everybody has some homocysteine in their blood but elevated levels (known as homocysteinemia) can cause serious health problems including atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries associated with heart attack or strokes and thrombi or clots in the veins. However it is poorly understood how homocysteine exerts its damaging effects. It has been hypothesised that homocysteine has a toxic effect on the innermost layer of cells of the blood vessels, creating irritation.Elevated homocysteine levels are measured through routine blood tests and typically a value of less than 13 μmol/L is considered normal , 13-100 μmol/L is considered moderately elevated and 60-100 μmol/L is highly elevated and greater than 100 μmol/L severe. Homocysteine levels appear to be higher in males, the elderly, smokers and caffeine users.

Causes of High Homocysteine levels

  • Deficiency of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, Folate, Betaine or its precursor Choline.
  • Have a lowered MTHF reductase activity after but only people with defects in both genes.
  • Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) genetic mutations. People with this gene have an impaired ability to process folate and may need MTHF supplements. Adequate folate levels effectively cancel out the genetic defect. We all have 2 MTHFR genes, one inherited from each parent. Some people have a defect in one or both genes, but only people with defects in both genes, and not all of these will have problems with folate metabolism
  • Hypothyrodism
  • Kidney disease
  • Certain drugs may increase homocysteine levels
  • Psoriasis and SLE ( Systemic Lupus Erythematosus ) may increase homocysteine

Insufficient amounts of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, Folate, Betaine or its precursor Choline can slow down the natural breakdown of homocysteine allowing levels to rise.
