What is Metabolics Proline?
Proline is amino acid that plays a role in a number of functions within the body. It is considered a non-essential amino acid because the body can produce it from other compounds or amino acids, however we also obtain it from the diet, mostly through protein sources. Proline is required for the synthesis of collagen. Collagen is a crucial structural component in bones, cartilage, connective tissues (such as tendons) and skin; therefore, it is necessary for the maintenance of joint health.
Collagen has at its core a triple helix of amino acid chains; three chains wrapped around each other. Each chain is constructed from repetitions of x-y-gly three-amino-acid units, in which the X and Y positions are often occupied by prolines (and the gly is glycine). Proline constitutes about 12% of collagen.
What is Metabolics Proline for?
Proline plays an important role in supporting digestive health through sealing and healing the gut lining. The amino acid is also thought to support cardiovascular health and has anti-inflammatory properties.
A lesser attribute of proline is its potential as an energy facilitator in situations of cellular stress. In such situations, proline can be broken down, through the action of proline oxidase, and in combination with the degradation products of the cellular wall matrix can form ATP. ATP is crucial in cellular energy metabolism.
Proline, as suggested by this research paper, is important in pregnancy because of its role in supporting the development of the foetus. It has a particular significance in lung development.
Who is Metabolics Proline for?
While proline can be made in the body, we also obtain it through our diet and those on vegetarian or low protein diets may find that they aren’t producing quite enough. Metabolics Proline is particularly useful for people who for not get enough in their diet and may need additional skin health support. Those who find wounds take longer than expected to heal might find it beneficial to speak with a healthcare practitioner who can test for proline deficiency and then advise on dosage.
Proline can be found in a number of dietary sources, most predominantly protein sources such as organ meats, like liver, chicken, beef and egg yolks. It is also found in plant based sources such as asparagus, mushrooms, and cabbage, although in much smaller amounts. Because of this, vegetarian or vegan diets may not obtain as much proline from food as other diets.
