Vitamin K 2

Note: This product has been recently updated. Recent research suggests that supplemental K2 doses should be higher than previously thought. Metabolics Vitamin K2 has been updated to reflect this now contains 150mcg of Vitamin K2 per capsule rather than the previous 75mcg.

Many of you may not be aware of the great importance of Vitamin K2. It is only in the last 5 years that the importance of Vitamin K has become apparent. There are 2 important forms of Vitamin K, Vitamin K1 and Vitamin K2. K1 activates special proteins that help the blood to clot. These are found in green leafy vegetables. K2 activates 2 important proteins, one of which takes the calcium into the bones and the teeth and one which escorts calcium out of the soft tissues such as the arteries. Very little K1 is converted to K2 and it is essential that K2 is taken in the diet or through supplementation. K2 is found in the yolk of eggs, the fat of meat, in butter and in a fermented soya product known as Natto.

The main reason for Vitamin K2 deficiency is that our food just does not contain enough. Most dairy and meat cattle are grain fed, either partially or totally. Most chickens do not roam free to eat grass and only grass fed animals have sufficient chlorophyll levels to convert to Vitamin K2. Another reason for K2 deficiency is the introduction of Trans fats in margarine and butter substitutes. These contain a mutated form of vitamin K1, which is created when vitamin K1 rich plant oils are synthetically hydrogenated. Researchers have shown that tissue levels of K2 are lower when DHP is high. There are 2 forms of Vitamin K, MK4 and MK7. MK7 can last in the body for 36 hours, much longer than MK4 so Metabolics uses MK7.

Vitamin K2 contributes to the normal maintenance of bones.

Also consider the Vitamin D3/K2 combination as both K2 and D3 contribute to the normal maintenance of bones.
Vitamin K can be obtained from the diet and the amount you need depends on your age and sex.
There is no known upper limit for vitamin K, and the recommended dose for dietary deficient people is 1 capsule daily.

This product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
